Irish Author Colum McCann Attacked in Connecticut

Famed Irish novelist Colum McCann was attacked in a New Haven, Connecticut, hotel on June 28, an assault that sent him to the hospital and forced him to miss a speaking engagement.

McCann, author of the National Book Award-winning Let the Great World Spin, was in New Haven to speak at Southern Connecticut State University at an event hosted by Narrative 4, the organization McCann helped found to “promote empathy through the exchange of stories.”

McCann didn’t make his Sunday appearance, because on Saturday night he reportedly attempted to play the Good Samaritan by stepping into an altercation between a woman and a man outside New Haven’s The Study at Yale hotel.

Police arrived just after 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, and found the author bleeding from a head wound. He had apparently been knocked to the sidewalk during the altercation.

By Wednesday, July 2, it seemed that police were officially thinking that the man whom McCann confronted was his assailant.

Officer David Hartman of the New Haven Police Department said that investigators had found “significant leads.”

“What we believe happened is that the victim tried to intercede in what appeared to be a domestic dispute between a man and a woman,” Assistant Police Chief Archie Generoso said. “He saw a woman pushed to the ground. He tried to assist the woman. He asked the woman if she wanted him to call the police. He urged her to do so. She said she didn’t want to call the police. The guy said, ‘It’s your decision.’ He turned around, began to walk away, and he was assaulted.”

The author has chosen not to make a public statement at this time.

Multiple Security Guards Blocked Rep. Bridenstine from Entering HHS Facility Housing Minors

Some five security guards responded to Congressman Jim Bridenstine’s (R-OK) visit outside the Health and Human Services facility housing unaccompanied illegal immigrant minors at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, this week, barring his entry.

The secrecy surrounding the federal facility has the Oklahoma congressman outraged.

“I am a member of Congress, this is federal property, and they cannot prevent me from visiting,” Bridenstine told Breitbart News in an interview Thursday, explaining what his legal counsel is relaying to HHS.

Officials blocked Bridenstine from entering the HHS facility currently housing approximately 1,200 unaccompanied illegal immigrant minors Tuesday – leaving the Republican asking, “What are they trying to hide?”

“I am guessing they don’t want me to hear these stories [of suffering] because I will tell them to people,” Bridenstine told Breitbart News in an interview Thursday.

“Here we have a detention facility for unaccompanied alien children, and the president is showing a complete lack of transparency,” he added.

Bridenstine stressed that his primary concern is the protection of the youths but said they need to be repatriated to their home countries to discourage others from making the dangerous trek northward.

“The refusal to enforce the law has created more human suffering than enforcing the law would create – the human suffering is happening now because [of] this president’s refusal to enforce the law. This is about the protection of children,” he said.

Restricted access at the HHS facilities have not just been relegated to Ft. Sill. In a conference call with reporters about his recent border visit leading a congressional delegation, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte said Thursday that congressmen were not technically allowed to speak to the children detained in the facilities the delegation visited.

“In the facilities we were not allowed to speak with the children, but there were a few members who spoke with them anyway,” Goodlatte said, adding that he was able to speak with some of the illegal immigrant children near the Rio Grande River when Border Patrol apprehended a group of illegal immigrants.

HHS told Bridenstine he can visit the facility on July 21. According to the Oklahoma congressman, however, that is unacceptable and he is working to gain access before then.

In an emailed statement to Breitbart News, the Administration for Children and Families at HHS said they are scheduling tours with officials who request them.

“We have been facilitating tours of our temporary shelters at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Naval Base Ventura County-Port Hueneme and Fort Sill as frequently as possible without disrupting our ability to properly care for the children as part of this humanitarian situation,” the statement read.

“In addition to four media tours, HHS has provided five tours for approximately 55 local, state and federal elected officials who had requested the opportunity to observe the facilities, meet the staff and interact with the children,” it added.

Sheila Jackson Lee: Deportation of Illegals Not ‘Humane’

HOUSTON, Texas–During a House Homeland Security Committee field hearing near the Texas-Mexico border, lawmakers discussed the “humanitarian crisis” that involves thousands of illegal immigrants entering the country each day. Many, including Governor Rick Perry, have been adamant that the crisis will only get worse until the U.S. makes it clear that the migrants will not be allowed stay. But Texas Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson See, who spoke at the hearing, insisted that harsh action should not be taken against the migrants.

“This is not a national security crisis, this is a humanitarian crisis,” Jackson Lee said, attempting to utilize emotional appeals.

The Congresswoman blamed the surge in illegal immigration only on violence in the immigrants’ home countries. She said, “We need to continue to use the word ‘humanitarian.’ These children have been forcibly misplaced.”

Texas Congressman Michael McCaul, however, argued that those on the left refuse to acknowledge the actions and rhetoric of the Obama Administration which arguably encourages more illegal immigrants to cross the border.

McCaul said that during a hearing he attended last week, “no one questioned the fact that these [violent conditions in Central America] are not new. … What is new is a series of executive actions by the administration. Just this week the president vowed to take more executive action on immigration very soon. The message these policies are sending is that if you come you can stay.”

He continued, “In some ways this is true. These kids and families given notices to appear–it will take years to get thru the immigration system.”

While McCaul and others advocated for detainment and expedient deportation for the illegal immigrants, Jackson Lee would not accept such measures as being an effective solution to the crisis.

“It is very important to know that a massive deportation policy and mass detainment of children is not a humane thing to do” she said. “We must find a way to follow the law–the law that transfers children to HHS. … We should be cautious in rushing to judgement in any form that would detain children.”

Jackson Lee continued, “Anyone who has spent time…listening to the Border Patrol agents, they will tell you these are the most orderly behaved children who simply want opportunity to escape the murderous conditions from which they flee.”

Despite the left’s attempt to portray the mass group of illegal immigrants in a certain light, there have been reports that some of the border “children”–most of whom are between the ages of 15 and 17–have cartel ties. Art Del Cueto, the Tucson Border Patrol Union president, told Judicial Watch, “They’re not all little kids. Some are 17 years old and they have possible ties to gang members yet they will be relocated in the U.S.”

Federal agents are relocating and then releasing many of the illegal immigrants onto U.S. soil, without the ability to verify the foreigners’ identity.

Victor Manjarrez–a professor at the University of Texas El Paso, former Chief Patrol Agent of Tucson Sector, and former Chief Patrol Agent in El Paso Sector–told Breitbart Texas, “Once [the immigrants] get processed, because there are not enough holding facilities, they’re scheduled for [an immigration] hearing sometime in the future. They promise to show up then get released. They then [often] call up relatives in Central America and tell them they got released.”

He said that ultimately, a lot of the migrants never go to court–many end up being forgotten about by authorities or get “lost in the woodwork.”

It is unclear how the crisis will be handled moving forward, especially given the disagreement between the left and the right surrounding its root cause.

Report: University At Buffalo Refuses to Disclose Amount Hillary Paid for Speech

According to a report that aired on Buffalo, NY NBC affiliate WGRZ on Wednesday, the University at Buffalo is refusing to disclose how much former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received for a speech she gave at the university earlier this year.

The university responded to queries about what Clinton had been compensated with a statement that noted the speech fees are “not public information.”

“Agreements with speakers are maintained by the University at Buffalo Foundation, a private non-profit organization. These agreements, including information about speaking fees, are not public information.”

Mumsnet’s Political Insights Are Right up There with My Spaniel’s

Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQs) is a big turn off. So says Mumsnet, the website for women who have had babies, are thinking about having babies, or who are just really into the idea that motherhood is such a blessed state in and of itself that it confers special insight and must be deferred to as often as possible on every conceivable occasion.

One politician who predictably agrees with them is milksop deputy prime minister Nick Clegg. Endorsing a petition signed by 56,000 Mumsnet users demanding that PMQs be made more accessible and less combative, he appeared at a specially convened Mumsnet Q & A session to show just how very much he cared about this vital demographic’s views.

Bravely and controversially, he told the assembled mothers that their petition was “brilliant.”

He said it was: “Basically saying: ‘When is Prime Minister’s Questions going to be a) scheduled to the time when people below 65 watch it? When is it actually going to allow other people to ask questions? When is it going to become less of this kind of Punch and Judy formula?”

Clegg went on to denounce the archaism and machismo of the Commons debating chamber.

“And so the whole thing is in a language which wasn’t used since 1867 and in a kind of highly aggressive, sort of, macho, chest-beating, testosterone-driven idiom which is deeply off-putting to – to any normal person.”

Elsewhere, Sky News reported on some of the special insights on Westminster politics to be found among Mumsnet users.

Nicola Turner, mother of four-year-old Lily, said: “I think they’re quite immature in a lot of respects, quite inconsiderate of each other. “They need to allow time for each person to speak and show the respect and consideration of allowing those people to speak without interrupting them.”

Vicky Barton, who has a one-year-old son William, agrees. She said: “The fact that the speaker had to stand up several times and tell them to be quiet and calm down, you get that in nursery or in primary school, you certainly don’t expect adults to have to be told more than once.”

The temptation with news “stories” like this – covered uncritically in the Mail, on Sky, in the New Statesman and on LBC radio; endorsed, as we have just seen, by Nick Clegg – is either to ignore them or report them dismissively with added snark.

Problem is, neither technique quite addresses the serious underlying menace here: a phenomenon which probably deserves the Twitter hashtag #waronmen

Why, pray, should the views on PMQs (or any other political issue for that matter) held by women with children be afforded any more significance than those of, say, cyclists or spinsters or hairdressers? And if we’re consulting Mumsnet, why not Dogsnet and Catsnet and Goldfishnet? Or – indeed – Dadsnet?

The answer, unfortunately, is that Mumsnet represents the vaguely acceptable face of a shrill, manipulative, bossy and often rather nasty neo-feminist movement whose influence can be seen everywhere from the hysterical Twitter trolling of characters like Caroline Criado Perez (the irritant who campaigned successfully to get Jane Austen on the next £10 note – not on her literary merits but on the ludicrous grounds that the author of Pride And Prejudice was some kind of proto-feminist) to the current Salem-style frenzy over the various celebrities or semi-celebrities being aggressively pursued through the courts for various alleged sexual offences at the behest of a new female Director of Public Prosecutions on an apparently holy mission to secure more rape convictions.

Do you like this new enlightened age into which these harpies are dragging us, kicking and screaming, by our rude bits?

Perhaps you do. But only if you agree all men are rapists, that a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle, that the reason there aren’t more women in the boardroom is because of corporate sexism, that sending sexist emails or tweeting disobligingly about your favourite Guardianista feminist harpie ought to be a career-destroying offence, that any criticism of anyone female is prima facie evidence of incorrigible misogyny, that the reason there aren’t more women engineers and neurosurgeons is because of a phallocentric bias which needs urgently addressing through positive discrimination, that women players at Wimbledon deserve exactly the same prize pot as men even though they play fewer sets and they’re less interesting to watch, that if only we had more female talents like Caroline Lucas and Hillary Clinton in government everything would run much more smoothly and consensually without any of that willy-waving war-mongering which is all men – bless – are really capable of because they’re all neanderthals at heart, rapists too, did I mention that all men are rapists?

Otherwise you might find this new cultural climate a mite disconcerting.
