‘Bad News for David Cameron’ As Immigration Figures Climb to Over Half a Million A Year

Prime Minister David Cameron and Home Secretary Teresa May face embarrassment today as independent figures revealed that Britain’s net migration has jumped from 175,000 to 243,000 over the past year.

The jump, despite a pledge by the Conservative Party to reduce the number to ‘below 100,000’ comes just before the party conference season, where Cameron will no doubt face backlash from party activists who are a more conservative disposition than him and his government.

The figures from March 2013 to March 2014 reveal an increase in the number of people coming to Britain, net migration being the measure of how many people arrive in Britain minus how many leave.

The BBC’s Home Affairs correspondent said the figures spelled ‘bad news’ for Cameron and May, and will add further grist to UKIP’s mill.

Nigel Farage’s party have for some years claimed that net migration is impossible to control due to Britain’s obligations under the Lisbon Treaty. European Union members are free to travel to, and settle in Britain, with Romania and Bulgaria becoming the latest countries to get freedom of movement for its citizens.

The figures reflect a “statistically significant” rise of immigration, up to 560,000 from 492,000 the year before. The number of Bulgarians and Romanians coming into the UK more than doubled.

The Office for National Statistics lists the following key figures:

  • Net long-term migration to the UK was estimated to be 243,000 in the year ending March 2014, a statistically significant increase from 175,000 in the previous 12 months.
  • While net migration has increased since the most recent low of 154,000 in the year ending September 2012, it remains below the peak of 320,000 in the year ending June 2005.
  • 560,000 people immigrated to the UK in the year ending March 2014, a statistically significant increase from 492,000 in the previous 12 months. Two-thirds of the increase is accounted for by immigration of EU citizens (up 44,000 to 214,000).
  • An estimated 316,000 people emigrated from the UK in the year ending March 2014. Long-term emigration has been relatively stable since 2010.
  • 28,000 EU2 (Romanian and Bulgarian) citizens immigrated to the UK in the year ending March 2014, a statistically significant increase from 12,000 in the previous 12 months.
  • There was a statistically significant increase in immigration for work (up 38,000 to 228,000), driven by increases for EU15 and EU2 citizens. Estimated employment of EU citizens was 17% higher in April to June 2014, compared to the same quarter in 2013.
  • Immigration for study remained stable (177,000) in the year ending March 2014. Study visas granted in year ending June 2014 rose 7%, reflecting higher levels of university-sponsored applications (applications for other education sectors fell).
  • 265,000 non-EU citizens immigrated to the UK in the year ending March 2014. This ends a steady decline since the recent peak of 334,000 in 2011.
  • Work and study visas granted rose 10% (+14,799) and 7% (+13,885) respectively in the year ending June 2014, compared to the previous year, following a decline since 2011. The increase in work visas was largely accounted for by skilled work (+11,744).
  • There were 23,479 asylum applications (main applicants) in the year ending June 2014, similar to the previous 12 months (23,523), but low relative to the 2002 peak (84,132).

The Politics of Executive Amnesty: Obama Would Be ‘Pointing a Gun at Sitting Senators and Firing’

As President Obama considers going forward with a unilateral amnesty for millions of illegal aliens, even some proponents of immigration reform are warning the political consequences will be calamitous.

“Some Democratic senators are probably not going to come back. And it’s stunning, right, it’s literally like the president is going to put a gun to the head of Democratic senators,” Tamar Jacoby, president and CEO of ImmigrationWorks USA — a federation of small businesses that rely on immigrant labor and are pushing for immigration reform —  predicted to Breitbart News.

Jacoby was referring to vulnerable Democrats facing reelection in red states such as Arkansas Sen. Mark Pryor, Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu, Alaska Sen. Mark Begich and North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan.

“It’s all but certain that this is going to be a decisive factor in their elections and [Obama] knows it. Everybody knows it. And they are just making the calculation the long term gain is more important,” Jacoby said, explaining that the White House likely sees the long term gain to be helping to persuade, if not solidify the Latino vote.

“The long term gain is more important, but it is still pretty stunning: President pointing a gun at sitting senators and firing,” she added.

Republican consultant Ron Bonjean of Singer Bonjean Strategies, echoed Jacoby’s prediction, emailing Breitbart that such executive actions on immigration would be harmful to red state Democrats but would contribute to Obama’s legacy.

“Executive actions on immigration would cause damage to Democrats in red states because voters are on the other side of Obama, especially when it comes to amnesty,” he emailed. “Should Obama move forward with an executive order before the November election, it would be obvious that he cares more about his long-term legacy over the interests of his Democratic colleagues.”

And the political fallout from an executive order offering legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants do have some red state Democrats concerned, issuing statements calling for Obama to settle the matter through the legislative process.

On the other side of the equation, Jim Manley, the senior director at QGA Public Affairs and a former spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that he does not expect an executive action that would confer legal status millions of undocumented immigrants will be overly detrimental to red state Democrats in the upcoming midterms.

“I’m not convinced that this issue is going to be that big of a deal when it comes time for the elections in November. I think in the end the elections are going to revolve around jobs and the economy,” he said in an interview with Breitbart. “Having said that I am sure some are talking to the White House and that is something that the president and his team are going to have to weigh as they move towards making a decision.”

According to Manley many Hispanics and Democrats “want the president to go as big as possible,” given the lack of movement on comprehensive immigration reform in Congress.

Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, split the difference, saying that the ensuing political fallout will be a battle of the Democratic versus Republican bases.

“Instead of Spy vs Spy, it will be Base vs Base,” he explained.

“Obama hopes to generate a large Hispanic turnout, and to reverse the usual pattern of Democratic minorities not turning out in large numbers for midterms,” he wrote in an email to Breitbart.

“Republicans hope that Obama’s executive order will outrage their base, producing a larger-than-usual turnout of anti-illegal immigration voters. That’s the nub of it, and election day will be the proof of whose theory was more accurate,” he added.

And pro-amnesty activists are quick to say that an executive order will be politically beneficial not only in the long term but also in the short term.

“While some people who are against immigration reform would certainly be angry. We certainly believe a lot of people will really be energized and go to the polls because it would be incredibly significant. Because we’re talking about the president providing relief to families who really are suffering and the nation has been waiting for a really long time for this,” Andrea Mercado, a co-chair of We Belong Together, an advocacy group for immigration reform, said in an interview with Breitbart.

Meanwhile the National Republican Senatorial Committee is saying that such an action would energize voters to head to the polls and take their frustration with Obama out on Democratic candidates.

“[Obama] has no legal authority to grant ‘executive amnesty’ and little public support to do it,”  NRSC spokesman Brad Dayspring said in a statement. “The only conceivable explanation for the President to take such an unprecedented and drastic action would be that he has already conceded the Democrats’ Senate Majority and wants to get ahead of 2015.

“Executive Amnesty would be the political equivalent of nuclear explosion for Democratic candidates like Mary Landrieu, Kay Hagan, Mark Pryor and Jeanne Shaheen. Democrats are terrified of this issue,” he continued. “President Obama’s Executive Amnesty would inject adrenaline into an electorate already eager to send him a message of disapproval.”

Braley Fund Raiser Defended Alleged Pedo Priest, Attacked Mormons and Jews

Following up on a Weekly Standard Report,  Breitbart News has discovered a seemingly abandoned Twitter feed that may yet prove to be another major embarrassment for Iowa Democrat Bruce Braley.

Trial lawyer Tom Bottaro is hosting the upcoming Braley event and this appears to be his Twitter feed. While a big fan of The Voice and Democrats, he doesn’t seem to share that affection for Mormons or Israel.

Supporters of Iowa Democrat Bruce Braley will raise money Wednesday night at the home of an attorney who once defended a Catholic bishop accused of molesting young boys. Trial lawyer Tim Bottaro will host the fundraiser at his home in Sioux City along with other supporters of Braley’s Senate campaign.

Here Bottaro retweets an account with an unfortunate X-rated name in support of a Voice contestant.

Here Braley supporter Bottaro displays a disdain for Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith, or perhaps his fidelity to his wife.

He also doesn’t seem to think a discussion of the fate of Israel belongs in a presidential debate. Evidently he’s only interested in defending organized religions when it’s for pay, as in the case of the alleged child molesting priest.

Bottaro also sides with Obama’s anti-gun agenda,  his foreign policy and on DOMA, as well.

Bottaro was also attacking former President Bush in a most juvenile manner as recently as 2013.

But Braley’s fellow trial lawyer does seem to be a fan of esurance for some reason.

As TWS pointed out, Braley’s fellow trial lawyer Bottaro ran commercials with his firm’s catchy phone number, 1-800-I-AM-Hurt. See below. The account appears to be the same Timothy Bottaro given that he follows Michelle Obama, David Axelrod and several other prominent Democrats, as well as a Tea Party account.

Timothy Bottaro followed Top Conservative Cat, David Axelrod, Michelle Obama and 13 others

Two Men Found in Philly River Bound, Gagged, Stabbed; Third Man Escapes

Police in Philadelphia are investigating the case of three possible robberies that all ended with the victims being bound and gagged with duct tape, then stabbed, and finally thrown in the Schuylkill River to drown. The third victim escaped death and alerted police to the attacks.

According to Detroit News, the third man, who remains unidentified, told police he was thrown into a van by four or five people, beaten, and bound and gagged with duct tape. He was robbed and then stabbed several times.

The 20-year-old man said he saw the other two victims already in the van when he was abducted. He didn’t know if they were alive when he was taken.

His abductors then drove to the Schuylkill River near Fairmount Park and threw all three duct tape-bound victims into the water. At least one had a makeshift anchor tied to him.

The third victim was found stumbling down the street and was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital for treatment. Police were called at around 4AM on Wednesday, August 27.

“Both of the dead bodies had duct tape wrapped around their face,” Philly Chief Inspector Scott Small said on Wednesday according to CBS Philly. “They also both appeared to be bound at the wrists and ankles. They also appeared to be tied or tethered to some sort of piece of debris, some sort of weight used as an anchor to keep them under water.”

“We’re looking for any evidence–any tire tracks, any footprints because it is a dirty, muddy area,” Small said. “And if a van did back off of the paved parking lot and onto the grass, onto the dirt, we may be able to get some cast impressions of the tire tracks, and possibly even footprints. We’re looking for any other evidence we can find.”

It is unclear if the three victims had any connection to each other. At first Police weren’t even prepared to confirm the gender of the two dead victims. Eventually it was reported that all three victims were male.

The other two victims were pronounced dead at the scene and have yet to be identified.

CA Lawmakers Aim To Ban English Only Instruction in Public Schools

On Tuesday, a few hours after Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto said that Illegal Aliens deserve justice in the USA and Gov. Jerry Brown welcomed all illegal immigrants to California, lawmakers in Sacramento passed a proposed ballot measure seeking to dismantle the English-only mandate for public schools and increase multilingual education programs.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Los Angeles), chairman of the Latino Legislative Caucus, asserted “I think Californians’ attitudes have changed and they understand the need, now that we are in a global economy, to have a multilingual workforce.” Moreover, Lara says the timing is right “to revisit multilingualism, bilingualism and language immersion programs.”

Senate Republican leader Bob Huff of Diamond Bar called the bill “an end run around the vote of the people.” He believes that the language in the proposed ballot measure would make it easy for legislators to eliminate the English language instruction law by a simple majority vote, reported the Times.

The proposal by California lawmakers is designed to jettison the 1998 law which required English-only instruction in California classrooms. Many believe that inserting Spanish into the classroom only delays and hinders learning for English as second language children.
