Gove: Uniformity is Unconservative, Nation States are Integral

CITY OF LONDON, United Kingdom – British Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove yesterday stated the case for diversity within the Conservative Party, and offered his support for the idea of the nation state.

Gove, who was introduced to the Centre for Policy Studies’ Liberty 2014 conference as, “the man who is hated by all of the people you hate” commented on the expectations of conservatives on a panel entitled, “What does it mean to be a Conservative?”

The Education Secretary was the toast of the last event of the day, celebrated by National Review Editor Rich Lowry due to the condemnation of him by Britain’s National Union of Teachers. Lavished with praise, Gove tried to remain serious looking in front of the the mainstream media photographers.

Gove told an anecdote about New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who he met last month. Christie was told by local activists that he “wasn’t welcome” in a district that vote against him by 97 percent to 3 percent. The activist remarked that Christie was a “divisive” figure, to which the Governor replied, “Divisive? Ninety-seven percent of people voted against me… you’ve never been so united!”

“You can be a Whig and in the Tory party, you can be a Manchester liberal and the in Tory party,” said Gove. “The reason why we need to be so broad is that the conservative position is nourished by many currents and rivers of thought.”

He channelled Edmund Burke, who noted that “society is a contract between the dead, living, and those yet to be born.”

He went on: “Conservatives like the quirky. The appreciate that diversity, proper diversity, means that things will be different in different parts of your country and different parts of your realm.”

Uniformity, he said, is “unconservative” because it undermines the “rights of local communities”

“The Conservative Party must be a national party or be nothing”, he said, remarking upon how the Tories need to appeal to the many number of political visions across the country.

Speaking on nationalism, Gove was in favour. He said: “Nation states are the best way that rule of law, representative democracy, and social solidarity can be held together in an emotional and meaningful way.”

Lowry, from National Review, made the point that conservatives should be positive, as opposed to their enemies on the other side of the political spectrum. “We should be joyful, let the left be dour and humourless,” he said.

The conference in London was organised by the Centre for Policy Studies in honour of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Former First Lady Nancy Reagan sent a message of congratulations to the event organisers, who also attracted keynote speakers such as Niall Ferguson, Roger Scruton, Jonah Goldberg, Daniel Hannan MEP, Dr. Art Laffer, and John O’Sullivan.

Family Returns Soldier’s Dog Sold by Girlfriend While Deployed

A family who bought a dog through an ad on Craigslist just gave the animal back to a recently returned soldier after finding out that the soldier’s girlfriend sold the dog without his permission while he was deployed overseas.

When US Army soldier Robert Gabbert was overseas fighting for our country, his girlfriend sold his beloved dog, Baxter, in a fit of anger as the pair carried on a long-distance argument.

Gabbert had left his 3-year-old Shiba Inu with his girlfriend when he was deployed to Afghanistan. But it wasn’t long before she began to complain that she couldn’t properly care for the dog.

Eventually she sold the dog without telling her (now ex) boy friend what she was doing.

Once the soldier returned home to his station at Fort Carson, Colorado, and discovered the deception he launched an effort to find who bought the dog with his own ads on Craigslist as well as a page on Facebook entitled “Bring Baxter Home.”

Gabbert raised the dog from a pup and his Facebook page is filled with photos of the soldier and his beloved dog.

The family who bought the dog was soon identified, but initially they insisted that they bought the dog in good faith and felt no obligation to return the dog. The new owners also said that their children had become attached to the dog, so they were reluctant to give the dog back to the soldier.

After entreaties from Gabbert’s supporters, though, the family relented and decided to give the dog back to the heartsick soldier.

“I think the people that bought the dog and read the stories and felt bad,” Gabbert’s father told the MailOnline.

The soldier’s father also pledged to send the family the money they paid for the dog so that they might have the funds for a replacement for their children.

“I do feel bad for them. They bought him and didn’t know that he wasn’t hers to sell. The kids should have a dog,” the soldier’s father said.

Dodgers Ace Clayton Kershaw Throws No-Hitter

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw was nine outs away from joining Sandy Koufax, the southpaw to whom he is often compared, in the history books as the only other Dodger to throw a perfect game.

He settled for a no-hitter instead.

Kershaw had a career high 15 strikeouts and no walks on Wednesday evening at Chavez Ravine in an 8-0 win over the Rockies. It was the 22nd no-hitter in the franchise’s history, which is tops in Major League Baseball, and the second no-hitter for the team in the last 30 days.

The Texan who has two Cy Young Awards and signed a $215 million contract in the offseason had a perfect game through six innings before Hanley Ramirez botched a grounder to open up the 7th inning. That error ended Kershaw’s chance to join Koufax, who has four no-hitters, in the history books.

Kershaw punctuated the no-hitter with an exclamation mark by striking out Corey Dickerson, who happened to reach on Ramirez’s error in the 7th.

Kershaw’s had the most strikeouts (15) by a southpaw in a no-hitter since Warren Spahn (15) in 1960, topping even Koufax’s 14 strikeouts in his 1965 perfect game at Dodgers Stadium against the Chicago Cubs. Legendary Dodgers announcer Vin Scully called that perfect game, and Kershaw’s no-hitter was the 20th no-hitter that Scully has called in his career in addition to three perfect games.

Josh Beckett pitched a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies earlier in the year, which is the only other no-hitter that has been throw this year in Major League Baseball.

Rep Louie Gohmert Cites Breitbart Texas’ Sylvia Longmire on House Floor

During a general speeches session on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday, Rep. Louie Gohmert cited Breitbart Texas’ Sylvia Longmire’s piece from earlier in the week about the unaccompanied Central American youth being housed at U.S. Border Patrol facilities being eligible for amnesty under immigration and asylum laws currently on the books.

“Story from Breitbart this week – ‘Pro-Bono Lawyers: Most Unaccompanied Border Children Eligible for Amnesty,'” Gohmert said. “Story by Sylvia Longmire. Under the authority of the Homeland Security Act, the federal government transfers custody of illegal immigrant children who are apprehended alone at our borders to the Department of Health and Human Service’s Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). Their goal is to reunite them with a family member or legal guardian already here in the U.S.”

Gohmert warned this avenue of non-enforcement of U.S. law was a “good lesson” in how great nations are lost.

“So, as U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen has said, now we are engaging in human trafficking,” he continued. “This is a good lesson on how you lose a great nation because you refuse to enforce your laws. This country has never had perfect laws. Never will have perfect laws. They are made by man. But the thing we’re supposed to eternally perpetually strive for is making them better and better.”

Ex-Beverly Hills Mayor Blasts Amnesty ‘Word Games’

Despite having led one of the wealthiest cities in America, former Beverly Hills Mayor John Mirisch blasted pro-amnesty advocates who compare the act of illegally entering the United States to violating the speed limit.

In a Monday op-ed, Mirisch, who now sits on the City Council, recalled attending an “Immigration Reform” panel at the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ annual Washington, D.C., meeting in March where he encountered the following sentence: “We believe that it is vital for any immigration legislation to enable people to come out of the shadows and fully pursue the American Dream for themselves and their families.”

“‘Immigration reform’ itself is often a code word for amnesty. In an attempt to redefine illegal immigration as something it is not, the term ‘illegal immigrant’ has been stricken from the stylebooks of news agencies and newspapers,” he wrote. “Would, perhaps, ‘immigration fraudster’ be a more apt description?”

He then said that “despite these nonsensical attempts to redefine words in the English language by the likes of Marco Rubio, in my book, providing a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants is amnesty – or even more than amnesty.”

He then said that pro-amnesty advocates who compare illegally entering the United States to speeding are misguided and said a “more apt vehicular analogy would be the individual who gets a speeding ticket but who doesn’t have a driver’s license.”

“Even if they paid a fine and attended traffic school, we wouldn’t give them a license unless they went through the same process as everyone else who wants a license,” he wrote. “And as anyone who’s ever been to the DMV knows, they’d have to go to the back of the line.”

Mirisch concluded by saying his “opposition to amnesty is mainly based on fairness and the potential to set a precedent.”

“Any and every policy that results in the legalization of illegal immigrants – short of sending them back to their home countries to wait at the back of the legit immigration line – is unfair to those would-be immigrants who are playing by our rules,” he wrote.
