Homeland Security Approves Design of Driver’s Licenses for California’s Illegal Immigrants

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has approved the design of driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants in California. DHS had previously rejected an earlier design (pictured above) because it was not sufficiently distinctive from regular driver’s licenses.

According to the Sacramento Bee, DHS sent a letter to Department of Motor Vehicles director Jean Shiomoto on September 17 informing them of their approval.

“DHS commends California’s efforts to improve the security of its licenses and identification cards and looks forward to continuing to work with you on this matter,” the letter read.

California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law in October a bill that provides illegal immigrants in California with specially-marked driver’s licenses, calling the move “the first step” of a national movement.

But the Department of Homeland Security rejected the initial design of the licenses, saying they were too similar to regular licenses. According to the Los Angeles Times, the only distinction on the first proposed design were the letters “DP,” for “Driving Privileges,” in the space where “DL,” for “Driver’s License” was.

According to the Bee, the new, accepted design has the words “FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY” written across the front of the license.

“We tried to have much more subtle changes, but that was not acceptable to the Department of Homeland Security,” Assemblyman Luis Alejo (D-Watsonville), the author of the original bill, told the Bee. “We got the best compromise under the situation.”

An estimated 1.4 million illegal immigrants will apply for the new driver’s licenses over the next three years, the AP reported in October. This year’s budget includes $67 million for opening new DMV offices and training staff to handle the expected increase in applications.

According to the Bee, state officials estimate the licenses will cost California $141 million over the next three years.

College Student Forced to Remove American Flag from Balcony, ‘Could Offend Foreign People’

A San Diego State University sophomore was forced to remove an American flag from his balcony after apartment managers said foreigners could find the display offensive.

Brad Smith, who had just moved into the Boulevard 63 apartment complex in San Diego last month, told ABC 10 News that he received a written notice to remove the flag a few days ago.

“We were then told that it was for political reasons and that the flag could offend foreign people that live here, foreign exchange students,” Smith said. “I’ve had friends and family fight to defend that flag.”

While Smith’s lease agreement with the apartment’s management does have a clause that says “no signs or other personal property may be kept outside the premises,” attorney Christian Curry told ABC. that the clause comes close to infringing on First Amendment rights.

“Clearly, they want to keep it clean and that’s something they want to accomplish,” Curry said. “It’s a compelling reason, but it’s hardly a reason that’s going to overcome your free speech.”

Management initially told ABC that anyone who hangs a flag would be asked to take it down; however, it looks like the management capitulated after the media highlighted the story. An associate of the owners of the apartment complex told ABC there was a “misunderstanding,” and that the flag would be allowed to fly.

Giffords’ Attack Ad on Pro-Gun Candidate Backfires, Hurts Own Image

On September 17 Breitbart News reported that Americans for Responsible Solutions (ARS)–the gun control group founded by Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly–was running an ad attacking GOP Congressional candidate Martha McSally for defending the Second Amendment.

In the ad, family members who lost other family members to criminal misuse of a guns were paraded before the camera in an emotional plea meant to shame McSally into turning her back on gun rights.

On September 19 the Arizona Republic condemned the ad, saying it “waves the bloody shirt” by taking “the tragic death of two innocents” and trying to lay them at McSally’s feet. The Republic says the ad’s “base and vile” approach is hurting Giffords’ image while leaving McSally untouched.

The Republic says the ad is “more than Hardball politics,” it’s the “[exploitation] of a family’s tragedy to score cheap political points.”

McSally is running against Representative Ron Barber (D-AZ) for the seat in Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District. It is the same seat Giffords held when she was in Congress.

Barber supports placing more gun control on the American people. McSally says we don’t need more laws, rather, we need enforcement of the laws already on the books.

‘Cinco de Mayo’ Flag Case Could Head to Supreme Court

Leaving its February unanimous decision untouched, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused this week to rehear a case challenging a Northern California high school’s decision to force students to wear T-shirts inside out if they were emblazoned with the American flag on Cinco de Mayo, a holiday celebrating Mexican history and heritage, reports CBS 13 in Sacramento. The case could now head to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The appeals court had ruled that the school had the right to act as it did in order to ensure public safety.

Judge M. Margaret McKeown wrote for the court in February, “Our role is not to second-guess the decision to have a Cinco de Mayo celebration or the precautions put in place to avoid violence…(past events) made it reasonable for school officials to proceed as though the threat of a potentially violent disturbance was real.”

Officials at Live Oak High School, in the San Jose suburb of Morgan Hill, had ordered students wearing the American flag T-shirts on Cinco de Mayo 2010 to turn them inside out. The school had a history of racial tension between whites and Latinos on Cinco de Mayo, according to numerous reports about the incident.

William Becker, an attorney representing the students, said in February that if the appeals court would refuse to rehear the case, he would appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, saying, “The 9th Circuit upheld the rights of Mexican students celebrating a holiday of another country over U.S. student proudly supporting this country.”

Why Men Cheat WITH Me, But Not on Me

I’ve never been cheated on, obviously. But I know a cheater when I see one, which is perhaps why I’ve been invited to host and judge the first National Adultery Awards later this month. The Awards are run by Illicit Encounters, a website that says it’s the UK’s number one dating service for married people. Yes. Just let that sink in for a minute.

I have, of course, been “the other woman” on numerous occasions, meaning I’m pretty well qualified to talk about the reasons men cheat. More often than not, it’s simply because men crave sexual variety, as an infamous book published in 2003 explains. David Buss’s Evolution of Desire explains the science behind the fact that the most desirable men – strong, smart, successful alpha males, the ones we all want – are never going to be happy with just one mate.

And women know this. I think all women know it, deep down. Perhaps that’s the root of clinginess in marriages, where the passive partner, normally the woman, clings ever more tightly to her man because she’s terrified she’ll lose him if she doesn’t. But men simply aren’t wired for monogamy, and women keep getting this wrong. At least 60 per cent of men cheat on their wives, so you might as well plan for it and make sure that, when it happens, it doesn’t tear your relationship or marriage apart.

Tell your wife to read this column if she’s feeling anxious about your wandering eye. Because although it’s true that men feel the need to spread their seed more widely and more regularly than women do, there are plenty of strategies wives can use to keep their husbands interested, including but not limited to introducing new techniques and even people into the marital bed.

As a social conservative, you might expect me to be horrified by this. But it’s actually about keeping marriage strong, which I believe is really important. In the past, men would just have cheated anyway. All men cheat. It’s a fact of life. In today’s transparent, technology-enabled world, it’s easier than ever to cheat but it’s also easier to get caught. So why not be open and honest about the different needs of your partner?

I’m happily settled now, but I know that my man sometimes toys with the idea of seeing other people. It hasn’t happened yet, but, when he does eventually pluck up the courage to ask me about it, I’ll suggest first that whoever he has his eye on is brought into the bedroom with us.

This is one area of life Muslims, for example, get it right: Islamic cultures don’t give a stuff what happens between a consenting man and woman in the privacy of their own bedroom. Sure, that religion can be tricky when it comes to rights for women, and some of the things the Koran says about what a woman’s opinion is worth are pretty odious.

But it seems to me that we should do whatever it takes to keep the institution of marriage strong and healthy. It is the cohesive glue that binds society together, and research shows that children brought up in happy, stable families do better than those from broken homes. That sounds obvious, I know.

Illicit Encounters says it has amassed a million members among the 21 million married people in the UK. You can do the maths there yourself. And numbers that large imply that women, too, sometimes like to experiment outside the home – if, for example, their husbands aren’t providing for their emotional, physical or financial needs.

Of course, there are ways to keep things interesting that I won’t go into in any detail, because this is a family publication. They’re the reason I’ve never had a man wander when he’s with me. And a few simple rules you need to follow. One, make a fuss of him with food and treats, but don’t fuss over him so he feels suffocated.

Two, be sexually available. I think gay people are a bit more honest about how important this is, and why it’s important for the woman (or “woman in the relationship”) to be sexually available. Nothing turns a man off a partner more than being denied sex.

Three, stay in shape and be presentable. Men are primarily stimulated by what they see. If you don’t get your figure back after having kids, don’t be surprised if he loses interest in you. This takes a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it. Women are aroused by their imaginations, but men are simple animals. So make sure you look hot.

And four, never compete for his attention. You might be frustrated at the lack of attention you’re getting compared to his friends, sports or even video games, but nothing will make him run faster than neediness or demands on his time. You won him, he’s yours. He comes home to you. You have nothing left to prove, so chill out and find other hobbies.

As a homosexual, I don’t have kids to worry about, so I know it’s easy for me to say. But my attitude to managing the sexual appetites of my partners is why, even though we haven’t had kids to keep us together, my relationships have been long, stable and happy. The trick is not to suffocate, and to be open to the fact that men simply aren’t happy having the same kind of sex with the same person over and over again for years.

If that means mum and dad should get creative between the sheets to keep their love alive, perhaps that’s better than a sexual free-for-all in which women have children by absent fathers and the numbers of adoptions, abortions and children in foster care goes through the roof. Because really, which is worse, enjoying your husband with another woman, or losing him entirely and bringing up the kids on your own?

The National Adultery Awards are a light-hearted way to draw attention to how wrong some women get it, which you can tell by the relative scarcity of female celebrities in the various awards categories: it’s always men doing a runner. Perhaps the best thing us gals can learn from them is how to stop men making themselves eligible for such a gong.
