I’m generally skeptical of consultants who hype up digital and social media capabilities while ignoring the “old-fashioned” part of campaigning. Much was made in the 2012 election about the Obama campaign’s use of technology, while ignoring the boots on the ground networking.
As we get closer to the midterm elections I am gratified to see that we haven’t just been suckered by consultants insisting all fieldworkers use iPads. Instead, we’re using the kind of analytics and microtargeting data that allowed the Obama machine to turn out the vote.
A friend sent me this news about a new effort to target voters in just four states.
The PreCog Audience (PcA) consists of the voters in the “Big 4” Senate states that should be targeted because these voters will be persuaded by a specific message – and that will change their vote. The PcA includes each and every one of the more than 13 million voters in Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, and North Carolina that have been determined — right now, in advance — who will be persuaded.
“Is it a crystal ball? It’s as close as we can get,” said Adam Schaeffer, Director of Research at Evolving Strategies. “Is it a game-changing weapon for the Right this election season.”
“We are making available to Republican campaigns an exclusive product that no one else is offering. It has the potential to push Republican candidates to victory in the final weeks of this election cycle because you can now be certain your efforts are hitting the right voters with the right message. It’s political precognition.”
“Evolving Strategies now has access to our 190+ million records, including 4,000 election boards, county clerks and voter registrars, as well as party affiliation, race, exact age, vote history and school board districts,” said Aristotle CEO John Aristotle Phillips. “This is very powerful information, and we are honored to be working with such an innovative company.”
At least one pro-life group is already using the program. This is the kind of strategy I like seeing from our side. Too often we just focus on a national message on winning the war (Take back the Senate!) while not focusing on the battles that can realistically get us there.

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has ordered the military to put together a special “strike team” to aid civilian health workers in the event of future Ebola cases in America.
The “strike team” will consist of 30 members and will include “20 critical care nurses, five doctors trained in infectious diseases and five trainers in infectious disease protocols.”
According to Mail Online, Hagel spokesman, Rear Admiral John Kirby, says the team is specifically being put together for outbreaks in America and “won’t be sent to West Africa or elsewhere over seas.”
The US has already sent over 500 personnel to Liberia and Senegal and the number of personnel is supposed to hit 3,000 in the coming weeks. However, their duties will remain separate from those of the “strike team.”
On September 30, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the first “laboratory-confirmed case” of Ebola in the United States. The patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, died on October 8.
Amber Joy Vinson, a nurse who treated Duncan, then tested positive for a Ebola. But not until after she flew on a passenger jet–Frontier Flight 1143–from Cleveland to Dallas. On October 20 Breitbart News reported that a Marine who was also aboard flight 1143 entered “voluntary quarantine” to be sure he had not contracted Ebola.
The Marine, who remains unnamed, is stationed at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth. He has a family member in an elementary school in Fort Worth. Both the school and the parents of children attending the school have been notified of the Marine’s voluntary quarantine.

MCALLEN, Texas — An Texas border man will spend 30 years in prison for using the El Paso Public Library to download and exchange pornographic photographs of 8-year-old girls with various individuals.
On Friday, 34-year-old Berry Jay Miller from El Paso went before U.S District Judge Kathleen Cardone who handed down the sentence.
The case against Miller began in February when he entered a chat room and spoke with an undercover agent in Washington, D.C. about child porn, according to court records obtained by Breitbart Texas. During the conversation, Miller, who went by the screen name Pedo-Cowboy, sent the undercover agent some photos showing various girls who were three years old and some who were 8 years old.
Court records show that Miller told the agent that he was a registered sex offender and in addition to giving him his full name he even sent him a picture of himself.
The undercover agent was able to trace the email account and the username to El Paso Public Library where Miller would go to use the computers on a regular basis.
Miller had a state conviction for online solicitation of a minor from 2006 and another for indecency with a child in 2001 a time in which the victim was younger than 8-years-old, according to court records.
On August 11, Miller went before Judge Cordone and pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography charges.

Multiple media sources are reporting that at a campaign rally in Maryland, Sunday, crowds dispersed early as President Obama made an appearance in support of Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown, the Democratic candidate for governor. Reportedly, within ten minutes of his speech, people started stampeding toward the exits causing a “traffic jam.”
Reuters reported that “early departures of crowd members while he spoke underscored his continuing unpopularity.”
Most candidates from his party have been wary of appearing with him during their election races because of his sagging popularity.
Until this weekend, Obama had appeared at zero campaign rallies for Democrat candidates. Later Sunday evening he appeared at a rally for Governor Pat Quinn of Illinois, who is running for re-election.
The pool report via The Weekly Standard noted the “unusual” timing of the mass exodus – specifically – that some of the people started leaving as soon as Obama started speaking. He was also “heckled” by a pro-amnesty activist – if you consider a left-winger who shares the same ideology and objectives as the president a “heckler.”
Remarks are open press, but one unusual thing that fellow veterans of campaign rallies confirm: some in the crowd started leaving as soon as Obama started speaking and by the time he was about 10 minutes in, there was a traffic jam next to the pool’s tables as folks tried to exit the gym. As that was going on, a young man started shouting. Pool couldn’t tell what he was saying but as he was taken out of the room, we could see his sign, which read “#not1more,” a reference to the deportation of immigrants. As the man screamed, the crowd drowned him out, chanting, “Obama! Obama!”

Michael T. Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, writes in the New York Times:
The Ebola epidemic in West Africa has the potential to alter history as much as any plague has ever done.
There have been more than 4,300 cases and 2,300 deaths over the past six months. Last week, the World Health Organization warned that, by early October, there may be thousands of new cases per week in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria. What is not getting said publicly, despite briefings and discussions in the inner circles of the world’s public health agencies, is that we are in totally uncharted waters and that Mother Nature is the only force in charge of the crisis at this time.
There are two possible future chapters to this story that should keep us up at night.
The first possibility is that the Ebola virus spreads from West Africa to megacities in other regions of the developing world. This outbreak is very different from the 19 that have occurred in Africa over the past 40 years. It is much easier to control Ebola infections in isolated villages. But there has been a 300 percent increase in Africa’s population over the last four decades, much of it in large city slums. What happens when an infected person yet to become ill travels by plane to Lagos, Nairobi, Kinshasa or Mogadishu — or even Karachi, Jakarta, Mexico City or Dhaka?
The second possibility is one that virologists are loath to discuss openly but are definitely considering in private: that an Ebola virus could mutate to become transmissible through the air. You can now get Ebola only through direct contact with bodily fluids. But viruses like Ebola are notoriously sloppy in replicating, meaning the virus entering one person may be genetically different from the virus entering the next. The current Ebola virus’s hyper-evolution is unprecedented; there has been more human-to-human transmission in the past four months than most likely occurred in the last 500 to 1,000 years. Each new infection represents trillions of throws of the genetic dice.
